Thanks to the Ohio Ornithological Society for planning a great day of
birding at Killdeer Plains Wildlife Refuge in Wyandot County, south of
Upper Sandusky. A highlight for many was an American White Pelican on Pond
27. In the morning we saw this bird ride a thermal high into the sky and we
thought, perhaps, take off for warmer climes. But in the afternoon the
Pelican was back on a roost and swimming in Pond 27. By noon birders had
identified 80 bird species on the refuge including Common Loons on the
Upground Reservoir. Many stayed to bird in the afternoon. In the afternoon
we found American Pipits and Dunlin on Washburn Rd., south of Pond 27.

Helen and I drove over to Hardin County in the evening to look for
Short-eared Owls and found at least two on County Road 50 on the private
property birders call the "Hardin County Wetlands." Since this property is
privately owned you cannot walk there, but the owls were easily seen from
the public road. Nice end to a wonderful day of birding.
