We observed a northern shrike at Englewood North Metropark about 50 ft. off
the east side of the road that leads to the shelter. While it was easily
visible with binoculars, we set up the scope and enjoyed viewing the
northern shrike for a few minutes before it dropped to the ground, caught a small
mouse, and returned to the top of the same tree. While the mouse was
struggling, the shrike flew off with it. A pretty good sighting for a
rainy/snowy day!

Happy birding,
Ed and Bev Neubauer

P.S. A brief observation on the almost yearly disagreements about whether
such and such a bird was not but instead was a so and so bird (swans?).
During these intellectual discussions, I always try to keep in mind the
"first rule of birding" as we were taught in Cape May at CMBO spring and fall
workshops. "You keep your list and I'll keep mine."
