t stNot my favorite habitat, but today's itinerary had me in the commercial heart of Mentor. At the traffic light at the intersection of Mentor Avenue (US 20) and Heisley Rd. I saw a small hawk land on top of a telephone pole at the Speedway station. I made my intended left turn and pulled into the nearest parking lot to get my binoc's on it thinking, but wanting to be sure it was a sharp-shinned. Nope. Dark slaty gray like a mature accipiter, but with heavy breast streaking, not rusty barring. Then the facial stripe. It was eating its prey, presumably a small bird. Sat for while atop the pole, bill swiping, resting before taking off to the SE. Good long look.
BTW, earlier in the day, about 1:30 pm, had a V formation of tundra swans go over Auburn Career Center near Rt. 44 and Auburn Rd in Concord Twp. swinging from a NE to SW direction to due South.
