Greenways wetlands including the training loop and the stables, Kulhwien
Rd., Wet Prairie wetlands and the Metro Park this morning where we found
all water frozen. We were there from 1030 for over three hours finding
some interesting birds, locally common. Lots of raptors, many soaring in
late morning before it got overcast. One small. Corner in the wetlands was
open and, surprisingly, had a couple of species of waterfowl the only ones
seen.

Waterfowl. the little flock in one open strip of water held: 45 Canada.
Geese, 5 Mallards, 1 m. Ring necked Duck, 2 m. Buffleheads, 2 f. Red
breasted Merganser 2 m. Ruddy Ducks.

Raptors. Northern Harrier at least 18 with 15 seen in sight at one time
(soaring in morning); we saw FOUR ad. males, one is rare, but there have
been more than usual this winter. A Cooper's and 2 (ad., imm.) Red tailed
Hawks were along Kul. Rd. THREE (imm., 2 ad.) ROUGH LEGGED HAWKS were seen
over the WP wetlands in the afternoon, one hover hunting at > 200 ' for a
long time. This apparently has been an influx winter (RLHAs often move
south in Snowy Owl years).
Most noteworthy were a hunting Short eared Owl after noon which was up and
about for a while skimming and quartering over the high grass on the south
side of the WP. A couple of NOHA were seen in passing but neither reacted
to the other. We found a LONG EARED OWL roosting but finally flushed in a
stand of hemlocks in the morning.
Dicky Birds noted at the feeders at the entrance to the MP include Yellow
bellied sapsucker (2), Hairy Woodpecker, White breasted Nuthatch (8), Brown
Creeper, Slate colored Junco (45), and up to 20 Am. Tree Sparrows.
A flock of 25 Lapland Longspurs flew bounding over Kul. Rd. their calls
and even their chestnut greater coverts noted. Sparrows were abundant on
both sides of Kul. Rd. mostly near the east end where many gathered at snow
edge along road side. At least 200 Am. Tree Sparrows were seen at times
flying over the road south to north in flocks of 20 - 50; many others were
seen on weed tops and in shrubs.
Other sparrows seen were Field (8), Savannah (11), Song (65), and White
crowned (33).

Good birding
