I birded the lakefront in Cleveland today, arriving at Avon Lake Power
Plant about 11am. There was a nice patch of open water nearshore on both
sides of the pier. There were lots of both mergansers, and 6-10 each of
mallard, redhead, canvasback, lesser scaup, and common goldeneye. One
female long-tailed duck was very near the end of the pier and put on a good
show. An adult bald eagle made a strafing run across the birds. There were
lots of gulls, with a good number of greater black-backs and one 1st yr
glaucous.

Next was Wendy Park, which was TOTALLY FROZEN, including the river mouth.
There were a few gulls flying over, but that was it. However, the
consolation prize was a pair of peregrine falcons sparring overhead.

At E. 72st, the power plant was operating and there was a strip of open
water just off the steps from the parking lot. Lots of gulls were swimming
and on the ice, including one 1st yr iceland and one adult lesser
black-backed. There were 10 or so each redhead, canvasback, greater scaup,
and one each of ring-neck and bufflehead. Despite a lot of looking, I did
not see the kittiwake.

Though it was frigid, it was a good day on the lake. Randy Rowe, Wooster
