While yellow-bellied sapsuckers are migratory, some linger in
Hi Lyn,

While yellow-bellied sapsuckers are migratory, some linger in central Ohio through the winter. I took a quick look at the results of the Columbus Christmas Bird Count for the last 12 years. The low count for sapsuckers was three in 2004 and the high count was 21 in 2010. The median number found was eight, so seeing a couple is hardly surprising. Nonetheless, finding one in the dead of winter does seem a treat.

A handy resource for answering this sort of occurrence question is the Ohio Bird Records Committee Checklist of the Birds of Ohio. It has bar graphs denoting the relative abundance of species throughout the year, so it gives a much finer resolution than the very coarse range maps you find in field guides. You can download the checklist from the Ohio Ornithological Societies website <www.ohiobirds.org>. It denotes the yellow-bellied sapsucker as "rare" in early January.

Happy birding,
Paul

So that's two other sapsucker reports for the current cold week... can
anyone enlighten me, is this as unusual as it seems to me, or are there
many other sightings right now that people just haven't mentioned?
