This morning Hoover Reservoir was frozen over except for a few isolated areas kept open by the presence of waterfowl. The area immediately below the dam is open and had a variety of waterfowl including Canada Geese, Mallard, American Black Duck, Northern Shoveler, American Wigeon, Redhead, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, and Hooded Merganser. A few American Coot were along the shore of Big Walnut Creek. The big surprise was a fly over by a small group of Sandhill Cranes. When I first spotted them they were circling to gain altitude. They apparently might have been on the ground somewhere close by. After gaining altitude they flew off  to the southwest.
