Greetings - Phil Chaon and I birded Cleveland west to Sheffield and back today (Jan 10). The first cycle BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE continues to put on an absolutely remarkable and jaw-dropping show at the warm water outlet at East 72nd street (now Cleveland Metroparks property). Point-blank looks at the bird foraging with only a few Ring-billed and Bonaparte's Gulls, and flyby's to 15 feet away. We heard-only the LE CONTE'S SPARROW at Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve, with additional species: 100+ American Tree Sparrows, 13 Swamp Sparrows, 2 White-crowned and 10 White-throated Sparrows, tons of Song Sparrows, one FIELD SPARROW, and tons of juncos.
WENDY PARK is a JACKPOT for large gulls right now, as the harbor is partially frozen and 9,500 gulls are loafing on the ice and foraging in open slips. FIVE GLAUCOUS GULLS, plus 2 ICELAND GULLS (both first cycles) and one THAYER'S GULL (first cycle), three Lesser Black-backed Gulls were present amidst the horde. A spotting scope is necessary.
Offshore Rocky River Park, Bradstreet Landing, and the Rocky River mouth itself, more masses of large gulls including 300+ Great Black-backed Gulls. It is a remarkable year for Great Black-backed Gulls on the Lake Erie shoreline in Cleveland. Waterfowl diversity was excellent, with over 1500 Common Mergansers, Canvasback, goldeneye, White-winged Scoter and more.
Offshore Avon Lake powerplant and Miller Road Park, more fantastic gulling and waterfowl, but farther offshore. Two GLAUCOUS GULLS (adult and first cycle) present amongst throngs of large gulls sitting on the ice. Scope necessary.
Offshore Sheffield to the west of Avon, viewed from Sheffield boat ramp and Shell Cove Park, (4) GLAUCOUS GULLS, one adult ICELAND GULL, 7 Tundra Swans, 22 Mute Swans, a single LONG-TAILED DUCK, several White-winged Scoters and fantastic numbers and diversity of waterfowl, and again, mass numbers of Great Black-backed Gulls.
