I walked from Strawberry Pond along the closed Strawberry Lane towards Som
Center Road. There were three yellow-bellied sapsuckers working on the trees
near the snow-covered road just before the bridle path turns south into the
woods. I heard them long before I saw them.
There were also two pileated woodpeckers and a red-headed woodpecker working
the in the woods just down the bridle trail. A juvenile bald eagle flew
overhead just as I entered the woods on the trail.
I also saw a red-breasted nuthatch on the trails across the road from the
Strawberry Picnic Area parking lot near the kiosk. I also saw a red-breasted
nuthatch at the end of the Overlook Trail. (It was very upset with me as
were the chickadees and other birds. I didn’t bring any sunflower seeds.
This is where the park leads hikes to feed birds by hand.)
