Iceland, not Glaucous. :-) Why? The bill on this bird has an overall
dark, smudgy appearance -- all the way to the base of the bill. This is
expected on Iceland, which have dark bills with hints of pink showing up in
the bill base as winter progresses. Glaucous, however, should have an all
pinkish/pale base out to about 2/3 of the bill length, and a cleanly
demarcated black tip (or a black band, in some older immatures). Carl's
bird is very likely the same immature Kumlien's Iceland Gull that was there
yesterday.

Here are my photos of the bird, showing the bill for comparison to Carl's
photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/pauljhurtado/

Yesterday, the best viewing was from the sidewalk just south of the Broad
St. bridge on the east side of the river. There are a few metered parking
spaces here.

Good birding,
-Paul Hurtado
