Hybrid ducks are often missed among the throngs, so hats off to Alex.
This handsome one is among Ohio's most frequently recognized & reported,
with most reports coming from Lake Erie and nearby spots; four drakes
(hens must be equally numerous, but much harder to pick out) were
reported in 2007 for the state high count: Feb 16 at Castalia, Mar 11 at
Medusa Marsh, one 15 Mar off S. Bass Island, and another in Lorain on 17
Mar. Hoodies are notorious, with known hybrids involving nine other duck
spp.; maybe because they share tree cavities as a nest site with mergs,
things happen in the dark. A good find for central Ohio anyway......
