Hello all,
Made a couple stops around Grand Lake St Mary's and Indian Lake and had great waterfowl numbers and diversity. If a species was only at one location, I noted the location. Here is the list:
Red-Necked Grebe - Out in the open water off the marina between the St. Mary's beach and the park office. A scope is required.
Mute Swan - IL
Tundra/Trumpeter swan - IL between Russell's Point and Lakeview in the "slough" along State route 720. They were too far out to ID.
Canada Goose - several thousand at the slough probably cackling out there too, but I don't have the patience to look for one.
Greater White-fronted goose - 2 at the slough, but there were probably more
Snow Goose - 4 at the slough
Common Merganser - GLSM
Red-Breasted Merg
Hooded Merg - IL between Russell's Point and Lakeview in the "slough" along State route 720.
American Widgeon - At the slough
Nothern Pintail - 100's at the slough
Green-winged Teal - slough
Blue-winged teal - slough
Shoveler
Gadwall - slough
Ruddy Duck
Redhead
Canvasback
Lesser Scaup
Greater Scaup
Ring-Necked Duck
Bufflehead
Common Goldeneye - GLSM
Mallard
Black Duck
Wood Duck
The "slough," which is the flooded area along State Route 720 between Lakeview and Russell's point, had six to seven thousand ducks/geese. There were at least 2 thousand Canada Geese. I would bet money that Eurasian Widgeon, Cackling Goose, and Ross' Goose are probably out there. This is the most waterfowl I have seen in our area EVER. If you were looking for mega rarities, this is the place to go. I hope everyone else had as fun birding as I did today!
Spring Cheers,
Troy
