Excellent numbers and diversity of water birds at Atwood Lake today. I
birded both the dam/spillway area on the western/Tuscarawas County side as
well as the Dellroy and east marina areas on the eastern/Carroll County
side. The dam and campground areas had the most birds. Highlights were 2
RED-NECKED GREBES just off of the beach area. Horned grebes (14) were
present throughout the lake as well as 2 common loons. Waterfowl included
mallard, American wigeon, canvasback, redhead, bufflehead, lesser scaup,
ring-necked, ruddy, Canada geese, as well as common, red-breasted, and
hooded mergansers. Six double-crested cormorants were seen at the east
marina. Bonaparte's (approx. 40) and ring-billed gulls (approx. 800) were
present throughout the lake. Two miles west on a sheet water pond near New
Cumberland were 6 trumpeter swans (no neck collars), 4 northern shovelers,
2 blue-winged teal and 2 killdeer.
Zoar Wetlands also had good water birds. Only 5 Bonaparte's gulls were
found among nearly 400 ring-billed gulls. All mergansers (common,
red-breasted, and hooded) were present. Waterfowl included green-winged
teal, mallard, black duck, gadwall, American wigeon, wood duck, lesser
scaup, ring-necked, and Canada goose.
