Yesterday (3/23), a brief visit to Lake Logan (at the edge of the Hocking Hills in SE Ohio) netted 11 Red-necked Grebes, some in breeding plumage. Other birds included the more expected ~15 Horned Grebe, all three mergansers, Bonaparte's Gulls, Gadwalls, Mallards, and Ruddy Ducks.
One sad sighting was a male Common Merganser swimming continuously around the floating corpse of a female duck (presumably also a Common Merganser). Not sure how a dead female duck ended up in the middle of the lake with her mate(?) beside her.
