We have open water off the eastern tip of South Bass Island while the rest
of the island is still surrounded by ice.

An amazing number of waterfowl occupied the area yesterday between the ferry
dock at Middle Bass, the southeast point of Middle Bass, Ballast Island and
the tip of South Bass Island. In order of abundance:

Common Goldeneye
Bufflehead
Redheads
Canvasback
Lesser Scaup
Ring-necked Ducks
Mallards
Red-breasted Mergansers

There were also Canada geese, Herring Gulls, Greater Black-backed Gulls on
the edges of the ice.

My husband reported seeing tundra swans fly overhead yesterday afternoon but
did not find them at Scheeff East Point Preserve.
