Stark & Portage county reservoirs and lakes are holding good numbers of birds including25 total Red-necked Grebe today (3 at Walborn Res, 3 at Berlin Lake 224 bridge/Bike Trail, 5 at Mogadore Reservoir off of Sunnybrooke Rd, 9 at Wingfoot State Park, and 5 at Sippo Lake) and 18 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Berlin Lake (11 from the 224 bridge and 7 more near the bridge along the Bike Trail.)
Berlin Lake in Portage County both from the 224 bridge and along the Bike Trail that heads south from 224 is the place to be as it is holding thousands of waterfowl and gulls. In addition to the huge number of Lesser Black-backed Gulls there was 1 adult Iceland Gull today and 1st year Iceland and 3rd year Glaucous in recent days. A Red-throated Loon was here yesterday, 1 or 2 White-winged Scoter has been there for a number of days and huge numbers of grebes, loons, diving & dabbling ducks along with hordes of gulls makes for an astonishing number of birds to sort through. A scope is necessary to work through all the birds but a huge variety is close enough for great binocular views, especially west side of the bike trail.
Enjoy,
Kent Miller
