The major winter storm "Titan" turned south and missed most of Ohio a
few days ago, but hit spots south of here pretty hard.  Because the
Great Lakes remain largely frozen, migrating red-necked grebes were
forced south in numbers reminiscent of our more recent big fallouts in
2003 and 1994. Two lakes in higher-altitude N. Carolina had record
flocks of 86 and 59 where this species is hardly known:

quite a few. Outside of a group of 12 in PA, states at our latitude have
fairly normal numbers so far. Still, all those windswept grebes are
likely to be finding their bearings and headed north eventually...
