A Canadian birder (Ontario list) posted finding 2820 red-necked grebes
in lakeside suburbs of Toronto yesterday. This seems to be a clear sign
that these birds, thus far stranded in the south by ice, are at last
moving up to their northern breeding grounds. Paul Gardner and I found
three in a pond along Dick Rd in Pickaway County--an unlikely spot which
probably is only a few feet deep and not inviting to divers in any
lasting way--yesterday as well. I'm sure all the listers have moved on
already to the latest rarity, but I'll bet we can see the grebes'
disappearance from the local scene quite soon after a truly memorable stay.
