During the past week we had several nights of strong winds so I decided to check my nest boxes for any damage before the Prothonotary Warblers arrive. The boxes fared well with no new damage. A side bonus for the visit to Area N in Galena, Delaware County was a nice show by the first wave of warblers, several of which stay and nest. Along with the Yellow-rumped Warblers that are now in their nicest colors were Northern Parula, Yellow-throated and Pine Warblers. All were in breeding plumage and had on their Sunday best. I pished and a Yellow-throated Warbler flitted in so close I could almost kiss it on his bill. A very beautiful bird. Several other Yellow-throated warblers also came in to within 5 feet of us as did a couple of Northern Parula. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers are back and were feeding along Big Walnut Creek where there were plenty of insects. The creek had Wood Ducks and Blue-winged Teal swimming along the shore and in the flooded edge areas. On
the way out we spotted a Broad-winged Hawk perched along Dustin Road. Using the car as a blind we were able to get marvelous views of the hawk.
