For the last two evenings I have had excellent audio and views of woodcocks doing their spring courtship dance. I first heard them peenting in the scrubby woods near by house and this evening found a good vantage point to see them spiralling up by standing in the neighbors driveway to avoid standing in the woods in the dark. Unfortunately, the young adult neighbor pulled into her driveway and asked if i needed any help - i tried to explain that i was watching the woodcocks doing their spring courtship ritual and even pointed one out to her - i think she thought i was nuts. Or, she now has a new appreciation for her yard birds.
A barred owl joined the chorus - probably looking for woodcock dinner…..
