APRIL 05, 2014 - Cuyahoga Valley National Park & Metro Parks, Serving Summit County Monthly Towpath Trail Census.
HIKE: From Red Lock Trailhead south to Merriman Rd.
TIME: 7:00am-4:00pm TEMP.: 36-34-48 COND.: Cloudy & cold early - overcast & trying to snow; gusting winds at 10-20mph;
winds dying down & turning partly sunny from 12:50pm-2:00pm then turning mostly sunny & breezy.
FT.MI.: 13.0 OBS.: Dan Fish (Red Lock to Lock 29), John Henry & Douglas W. Vogus.
I. MAMMALS: 7 SPECIES.
1. Woodchuck - 3 (new Census high)
2. Eastern Chipmunk - 3
3. Eastern Gray Squirrel - 3
4. Eastern Fox Squirrel - 2
5. Red Squirrel - 19
6. Muskrat - 3 (tied Census high)
7. White-tailed Deer - 5 (doe)
II. BIRDS: 57 SPECIES (tied Census high for most species in April - 04/06/2012)
(NOTE: ? = bird was seen but not sexed; * = bird was heard calling but not sexed)
1. Canada Goose - 101 (1 nest)
2. Wood Duck - 18 (9m,8f,1*)
3. American Black Duck - 2 (1m,1f)
4. Mallard - 25 (15m,10f)
5. Blue-winged Teal - 1 (m) (new species on Census - Bird #164)
6. Ring-necked Duck - 13 (7m,6f)
7. Bufflehead - 2 (1m,1f) (new species on Census - Bird #166)
8. Hooded Merganser - 5 (1m,4f)
9. Great Blue Heron - 25
10. Great Egret - 1 (Lock 29 Beaver Marsh - tied Census high)

12. Bald Eagle - 3 (adults)
13. Cooper's Hawk - 2 (1m,1f) (tied Census high)
14. Red-shouldered Hawk - 3 (1 pair building nest in Boston)
