Some thoughts on International Migratory Bird Day. In the past, as a common courtesy; when a birder would find a rarity, or a bird, or birds, of interest, and reported it; they would stay at the described sighting location until someone else arrived. They would either show them the bird, or where it had last been seen. Sort of "Pay It Forward". If the reported bird is still being seen, it should be the responsibility of the next birder to do the same. If the reported bird can not be refound, then everyone moves on. Several times during this past week, I have arrived, as soon as possible, at a reported sighting location, to find no one there; wondering if I was at the right location. Another problem I find with the recent reporting, is that the exact time of the last sighting is seldom given. Posting time means nothing! Also, when someone gives a sighting location, such as Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, they need to be more specific, giving location details. Was it on the auto drive, and where. Was it near the visitor center, and where. Was it in a restricted section of the refuge, and where. Accurate and updated reporting is necessary for everyone participating in "The Biggest Week In American Birding", to totally enjoy this mecca of birding memories.
