Bob, re your "Thanks to all who replied with a fem
Greetings everyone,

Bob, re your "Thanks to all who replied with a female American Redstart."

The odds are this is not a female.

We all have to remember that birding listservs have members of all skill levels and slicing and dicing the often confusing subadults can seem like minutia to some, but there are others who are advancing beyond beginning birding and want to learn the finer details of plumage and aging.

There can be overlap in trying to separate 1st spring American Redstarts (AMRE) but I believe this is NOT a female.

* dark lores.  The 1st spring male usually has dark lores and 1st spring females can show pale lores.  When pale lores are present (your bird has dark lores), it is a female.

* black spots.  The black spots that show clearly on your image are diagnostic for 1st spring male AMRE.

Perhaps some banders with high expertise with this species and 1st spring subadults can chime in.

One of your two follow-ups gives newer birders the impression that it is a female and that is not correct.  It is "likley" a 1st spring male.  I just don't want members trying to learn aging left with the impression that the bird is most likely a female AMRE.  It is not an adult for sure, and it is likely a 1st spring male.

Thanks to all who replied with a female American Redstart. My Peterson Field guide didn't have a picture with the black dots on its
breast so that threw me for a loop.

Had this little guy in the yard this evening. Can't put a tag on him. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Bob
