Dan Sanders and I stopped by Preston Rd. in Bexley this morning. As we already knew, the flimsy nest had finally fallen down. I don't think any new sticks had been added this year at all. We did not expect to see a bird and none were there. We then spent almost an hour scouring the shores of Alum Creek. No luck. I did talk with a lady that walks her dog there every day and I told her what I was looking for and then showed her a photo on my phone. She was pretty sure that she had seen one on Saturday at noon. Not the best source of information, but still a bit encouraging. We then returned to Preston Rd. for one last look and lo and behold there was a Y-C Night-heron high up in the tree close to where its nest had been. We enjoyed watching it and realized that it might be the last time that we would see this bird or its relatives in Ohio.

The folks that live along Preston Rd. have been very tolerant of birders (for the most part). They are to be thanked for putting up with strangers with binoculars, scopes and cameras. And, the whitewash from the active nests was most unbecoming on the road!
