Thanks to the sharp ears of Steve Thompson, whom we met by chance on
Twp. Rd.# 217 in the Rehoboth Reclamation area (The Perry County Wilds), we
finally got a Henslow's Sparrow in these recreated grasslands. Steve first
heard the bird, which finally flew up, perched and sang for quite a while,
affording excellent scope views. And, this was in the middle of the day.
We had felt that this was prime habitat for this species, and Phil
Swan reported hearing one near by just a week or so ago. We can now add
this great find to the many grassland birds being seen in this reclaimed
strip mine, including Bobolink, Dickcissel, Grasshopper sparrow, Savannah
sparrow, Vesper sparrow, Blue grosbeak Eastern Meadowlark and Eastern
Kingbird. And don't forget Short eared owls, Northern harriers and Rough
legged hawk in winter. All of these species have been seen along the one
mile stretch of rt 217 off #8 Hollow Road out of the very small village of
Rehoboth, just north of New Lexington in Perry County.
