Like I said, this discussion should not be directed specifically at photographers.  I've seen many more "birders" go tromping through the weeds to get "a closer look" than I have seen photographers do that to get a shot.  It's a perception thing, somebody with a big tripod and a lot of glass is going to grab a lot more attention than somebody with a small pair of binoculars.

I had two nasty incidences in the past few months (both in Florida) where I got into it with groups of "birders". In both instances the "birders" went tromping off the roadway into the reeds flushing the birds. In both instances I was observing/shooting from the roadway. One group had flushed a family of Limpkins that included 3 hatchlings. The group began chasing them my way and began yelling at me to leave because they were coming my way and I was going to stress the birds!  It never occurred to the to group to stop chasing!  So it really irks me when "birders" start complaining about photographers.

"ALL" wildlife observers (camera or no camera) should be conscious that if an animal changes it's behavior because of your presence then YOU ARE WAY TOO CLOSE (camera or no camera).

It's a much more enjoyable experience viewing from a distance anyway. I went back the next day early in the morning and got to enjoy watching the same Limpkin adults breaking snail shells and feeding their young.  You won't ever get to see that by standing in the reeds!

I think the anti-photography thing needs to go the way of the feral cat and hunting discussions. ...

This is an "anti-photography" thread only if you accept that bird photography requires harassing birds. Otherwise it is an anti-harassment thread. How birders should deal with people who are observed harassing birds seems like an entirely appropriate topic for the list-serve.
