Hi,

Since this thread is about not "harassing" birds, why does this sort of
thing only seem to come up when owls are involved?

Rhetorical question... Owls are special and different from other birds. It
is okay to get close to a taped off Woodcock nest in the parking lot of the
Magee boardwalk. Or to hound a Varied Thrush, or....chum for gulls get as
close as you can to a duck or catch and band a 1st state record Calliope
Hummingbird (resulting it it dying) or... Whatever....

Just don't do it to an owl or an owl nest.

I know consistency is way to much to expect, and so think we should just
accept that people are mad for owls, and everyone has a different view of
how people should behave around these birds of myth and wisdom, not to
mention age. There has been discussion ad nauseam about owls and behavior
around them in this forum. Evidence presented supporting each position and
passionate argument.

I think we need to realize that most people engage in wildlife watching and
birding for their own reasons which are generally selfish and we need to
respect the judgement of the land owner or manager. If USFWS was worried
about this nest they could rope it off, divert the tour, or whatever.

Given access birders being birders will do what they do and if you don't
like it, have the courage to say something then and there. Yes that is
potentially far more difficult and may cause a confrontation. But going on
in this safe and comfortable forum is not going to change anything .

Relax it's just an Owl. Think about the havoc if the owlets start moving
and even get out of the nest tree as they sometimes do. Oh the horror...

Haans
