I looked up anting as suggested and the posturing of the robin was identical to the bird pictured.
I also checked out the spot it landed and there were no ant hills. So it could have been sunning, it could have been anting. Only the robin knows for sure!
Thanks for all the responses which made my day of backyard birding (and weeding) more fun!
