My "Some Thoughts On Rural Birding Rarities", posted this past Friday the 13th, was meant to be an informative and entertaining message. It disappoints me that it has been used as an item of controversy. I have received numerous responses to my personal e-mail address from birders in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. All have been of a positive nature. The following excerpt is one of my favorites, from Indiana birder, Brendan Grube.

Bob, Here in northern Indiana, another very rural setting, the Amish birder friends of mine are just as astute. The family groups of Amish that regularly bird, even arriving by the van load with their top-of-the-line optics, are educated at a young age in this outdoor hobby. The keen eyes of the young and the old are equaled by their ambitious outward pursuits in this rare interest we have in birding.
