Ohio birders usually think of June and July as a slow, unrewarding time, with only hard to find nesting birds to satisfy their birding appetite. This is not always the correct way of thinking. Numerous Ohio rarities have been found during this time period. An example was a year ago yesterday, on June 15th; my wife Denise and I traveled to Headlands Beach in Lake County to see a reported Franklin's Gull. While viewing the Franklin's Gull sitting on the beach, Denise saw another good sized black and white bird in the background, out in the Lake Erie. Lo and behold, it turned out to be a completely out of season Western Grebe in breeding plumage. A first ever for The Headlands Beach bird list. The Franklin's Gull, also in breeding plumage, was a very unusual June sighting for Ohio in itself. Always be looking, a rarity could show up anytime, at anyplace.
