The Headlands group today(July 31) (Ray, Jerry, Roger, Jim, Peter, Chia,
and myself) found an astonishing 83 species in the Mentor area today. Area
covered was Headlands Beach, Wake Robin, Mentor Lagoons, Veteran's Park,
plus Chia went out on the lake with his kayak and also birded the Fairport
Nursery rd fields. The previous record (according to Ray) on a single day
in July was 70 species. Our goal for the day was 74, but we ended with 83!
Highlights from the morning were:
Blue-winged Teal--hen seen at Veteran's Park (a first record for July in
Mentor according to Ray)
Great Egret
Osprey, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk,Bald Eagle, American Kestrel,
Peregrine Falcon
Virginia Rail--immature at Wake Robin
3 Sanderlings--west beach
Caspian Tern
all woodpeckers (minus sapsucker)
all swallows--including a single Cliff seen by Chia
3 Marsh Wrens--seen by Jerry at Wake Robin
Field, Savannah, & Swamp Sparrows
Scarlet Tanager, RB Grosbeak
Bobolink & Eastern Meadowlark
