We arrived at "The Sandspit" in Ashtabula County at 7:50AM this morning, Wednesday, in a light rain. An American Avocet in breeding plumage was also arriving, flying in beside us. In the approach bay was a mom Common Merganser with six little ones, two riding on her back. Other shorebirds in the sandspit pool were 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Short-billed Dowitcher, 1 Spotted Sandpiper, and 2 Killdeer. Also present were 1 female Red-breasted Merganser, 1 Bonaparte's Gull, and 38 Bald Eagles visible from the sandspit. We were fortunate to share the birds with Chris Swan and his son Connor. It is presently 9:10AM, the avocet is still hanging out. The sun is starting to shine. Us four have the sandspit to ourselves.

Bob and Denise Lane / Mahoning County
