Today I birded what is considered the Middle Wetland of Deer Creek Wildlife
Area off of Egypt Pike in Pickaway County.  After a walk down a road to a
dike, there are two ponds, one on either side of the dike.  The north pond
has extensive mudflats with some open water.  Seen today were 100 +
Killdeer, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpipers, Least
Sandpipers (there were probably some Semipalmated Sandpipers, too), Great
Blue and Green Herons, one Great Egret, 2 Pectoral Sandpipers, 3 Dowitchers
(Short-billed I think), and one Semipalmated Plover.  There were also
Canada Geese, Mallards, and 2 Blue-winged Teal.

The south pond is all open water surrounded by cattails and willows.  There
I saw one adult Common Gallinule with two young, one Mallard female with 8
small youngsters, 2 Green Herons which I was scoping when a Least Bittern
popped out and flew over open water into some cattails.

This area should be good as shorebird migration revs up.
