I arrived at "The Conneaut Sandspit" in Ashtabula County, at about 6:30AM this morning, Tuesday. During my three hour visit thru 9:30AM, the temperature went from 65 degrees to 85 degrees. It was a peaceful time, the only other visitors to the sandspit were a group of Amish fishermen and their driver. I recorded no less than 43 Bald Eagles in the harbor area, 31 from the sandspit, 10 of these, juveniles sitting on the sandspit. Of the 43, 5 were adults and 39 were juveniles. 12 were located on the backside of the aggregate piles. The only other birds of interest were 2 Common Terns, 2 Spotted Sandpipers, and a single Bonaparte's Gull. While in the marina area giving my eagle count to a Conneaut Port Authority representative, I was approached by a local backyard birder wondering if I was Bob Lane. After I said I was, he proceeded to tell me about the most exciting yard bird he had ever had, back on Memorial Day, Monday May 26th. At the top of the hill, right across the street from The Lakefront Motel, for most of the day, he had a male Yellow-headed Blackbird at his feeders. He now has my phone number. Next time there is a one day wonder, hopefully he calls! Some information for anyone planning a visit to "The Conneaut Sandspit" in the near future. Unless there are problems, the access gate to "The Sandspit" will not be closed for the rest of the summer. So you can come as early as you like. An exception will be this Saturday July 5th, all access to the sandspit will be denied while they prepare for the Saturday evening fireworks display. As I am posting this, next door to the east at Gull Point in Presque Isle, Pennsylvania; Snowy Plover, Avocets, and Willets, just to name a few, are being reported. Shorebirds are on the way!
