If you arrived at "The Sandspit" today, Monday, anytime after 10AM, you would have thought you were driving out onto a cultivated agricultural field, well disked and ready for planting. The now infamous Port Authority tractor and drag rake was out making the rounds, raking any surface it could find, and today that included driving thru the water areas, appearing to be trying to dry them out. He did succeed in eliminating the smallest, most productive, shorebird pool to the east. The Red Knot (Day #8), tolerated the annoying activity by staying out in the remaining pool area. Unfortunately, Chris Swan's wonderful Buff-breasted Sandpiper morning find, was not as abiding; being reportedly flushed by the tractor about 10:30AM, not to return. Fortunately, before this happened, there were birders and photographers who got to enjoy the buffie up close and personal. If the tractor would avoid the obvious areas frequented by the visiting birds, there would not be a problem. Enough of the negative. Some fun and interesting new visual entertainment

witnessed last week were bikini clad maidens on horseback riding around on the sandspit, and several Amish families swimming from the sandspit, fully clothed and in the water up to their necks; What a sight! Anyone that visits the sandspit, should congratulate the Red Knot for surviving The D-Day Reenactment this past weekend. I wonder if it enjoyed all the excitement.
