It came to my attention this past Sunday, that an unreported Piping Plover was at "The Conneaut Sandspit" all day Thursday, July 31st. Excellent photos were taken by at least two photographers. I forwarded one of the photos to Alice Van Zoeren of The Great Lakes Piping Plover Banding Program ([log in to unmask]). Alice, has once again, promptly come thru with the origin of the celebrity visitor; the very pale colored juvenile was hatched this summer at Wasaga Beach, Ontario. Leg bands galore, numbered metal on the upper left (041/970), yellow on the lower left, orange on the upper right, and yellow on the lower right. By the number on the USGS band, the exact chick in the brood could be determined. Wasaga Beach, Ontario is on the southeast corner of Nottawasaga Bay, on the extreme eastern end of Lake Huron. To reach Conneaut, our little friend traveled basically due south, 150 miles over the Ontario land mass, then another 50 miles across Lake Erie to Conneaut, Ashtabula County, Ohio. As far as I know, there were no reports from Friday. Where is the migrant first year plover now? Alone?
