The Laughing Gull seen on Friday at Deer Creek beach was still present this
morning along with 3 Caspian Terns and 100 + Ring-billed Gulls. Also seen
were a dozen Killdeer and an one Osprey flying over.

At the Middle Wetland of Deer Creek Wildlife Area there were still a few
small puddles. Much fewer Killdeer than last week, 2 Spotted Sandpipers, 6
Semipalmated Plovers, 6 Least Sandpipers, 2 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 2
Pectoral Sandpipers and 1 Solitary Sandpiper. No Yellowlegs - not enough
water for them.

I spoke to two Wildlife officers that were pulling up a duck trap. They
banded Mallards and Wood Ducks on Friday. They said the ducks were so
muddy that they had to carry them over to the south pond and wash them off
to see what species they were. Apparently they drained the north pond of
the middle wetland to let vegetation grow up for duck season. They can't
control the level of water in the north pond unless they pump water up and
out of the south pond. They drained the pond by opening a gate into the
south pond. They don't manage the area for shorebirds. That's too bad. I
told them it had been the only good shorebird area in Pickaway County this
July and August. Oh, well.
