I was at Sawyer-Ludwig Park in Marion for the historical society event today, and I was treated to a Merlin's repeated hunting attempts early this morning. It chased Blue Jays for 10-15 minutes straight, shooting through the trees and making many attempts. I never saw a successful attack, but it was impressive to see the acrobatic flight and many chases. It may have been a hatch-year individual, as the attempts seemed somewhat desperate and unlikely to succeed (the Blue Jays all knew the Merlin was there).
Additionally, I saw Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart, Magnolia Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, and Red-headed Woodpecker in the park, as well as many of the usual species.
