This traditionally is the time Sabine's gulls appear in North America,
and thus far state lists have reported this species recently in Iowa,
Illinois, Arkansas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Texas,
Washington, Utah, British Columbia, Ontario, Indiana, Colorado, Vermont,
Oregon, Illinois, Nevada, California, New Mexico, South Dakota, Wyoming,
Michigan, Arizona, New York, New Brunswick, Virginia, Iowa, and
Nebraska. I imagine many were seen, but not reported, and many were
present but not observed. They breed in the high Arctic and winter in
South America. You can see from the list they are scarcer on the eastern
seaboard, but this has been an excellent year overall for records in
Canada and the US. Distinctive and worth looking for over any body of
water right about now.
