I was able to observe our famous visitor, from outside the fence, for 30 minutes this evening. When I arrived at 5pm, it was perched on some rocks along the east side of the pond at Rt 4 and Tawa Rd. and showing the dark legs and feet that ruled out other small white heron species. After preening a while, it began feeding with its trademark quick runs and abrupt turns. A group of us watched from the fence line that parallels Rt 4, and which does in fact have a "Keep Out" sign. I would submit that a high fence topped with multiple strands of barbed wire is a de facto indicator of private property and any reasonable person would think twice before entering, even if the gate was unlocked. Furthermore, calling someone a Nazi when in all likelihood he was merely doing his job does not represent the best behavior of the birding community.
