Don,

Please tell Mr. Nisley that the Ohio Bird Records Committee greatly appreciates his taking the time and trouble to inform the birding community of the interesting birds on his property. Most birders would much rather chase a rare bird that turns out to be something different, than miss a rare bird because no one told us about it. Also, the realization that yellow rails can be confused with button quail is new information for most of us. I know I gained more benefit from the discussion about the identification problem than I would have from ticking "yellow rail" on my year list. He doesn't owe us an apology, we owe him our thanks.

And Don, thanks for facilitating the discussion.

Best regards,
Paul

Paul Gardner
Secretary, OBRC

Subject: [Ohio-birds] Yellow Rail Apology

Hello
everybody: I just received a phone call from Junior Nisley, regarding his identification error of the Yellow Rails at his farm, in northern Knox County. Junior feels very embarrassed about the mis-identification. He asked me if I would post his apologies to all of you who made the effort to observe this rare species for Ohio (Junior has no access to a computer). The conclusion was that they were Button Quail. I explained to him that Ohio birders understand that this can happen, and no apology is necessary, but I know Junior, and I know it was bothering him. So I told him that I would post this note to all of you. Happy Birding, Don Plant, Mohican Country
