Greetings from the flatlands,

Yesterday morning Micki and I, along with intrepid Paulding-based birder Scott Myers, had just finished a rather disappointing walk through the Black Swamp Nature Center and decided to check out the Paulding Reservoir. Scott had seen a few ducks there earlier in the morning, so our hopes weren’t especially high. Imagine our surprise when we saw a number of Bonaparte’s Gull with one addition- a Sabine’s Gull! Now we have been reading about the appearance of this species here and there in Ohio but never expected one to show up on our small reservoir. Fantastic plumage, wonderful bird, and best of all, it was Micki’s birthday, so the bird was the best birthday present she could have gotten!

Kinda makes up for the dozens of times we have checked the reservoir and found it wanting for birds. You just never know what surprises Mom Nature has in store.

Bird long and prosper,
Doug & Micki Dunakin
Antwerp, O.
