A visit to Hoover Meadows this morning produced some nice early season surprises. Near the pines at the front area we located Red-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Yellow-rumped Warblers and a Pine Warbler. Near the second pond we had a Sharp-shinned Hawk working the field and in the brushy edges we located Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Eastern Bluebirds, Savannah Sparrow, Swamp Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows and a Fox Sparrow. Near the third pond we had a Red-shouldered Hawk, Swainson's Thrush, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Eastern Towhee, an American Tree Sparrow, Swamp Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows and Red-winged Blackbirds. While walking back to the parking area a flock of about 35 Sandhill Cranes did a flyover with a northeast heading (wrong direction guys). All told we had 37 species at this 91 acre section of the Hoover Nature Preserve. A pleasant day shared with a good friend.
