I stopped for an hour mid-day today, Oct 16, at the new Lake Erie Bluffs
metropark in Lake County. This was my first visit and I was very impressed.
There is lots to see now and I would expect this would be a great place for
spring migrants, both song birds and those on the Lake. There are excellent
trails through several habitats and several good lake-watching vistas atop
the cliffs.

I watched Lake Erie for ~20 minutes today from the bluffs. The best
sighting was a red-throated loon just sitting on the lake not all that far
offshore. It was pretty well in winter plumage, but I thought I could still
see a small hint of red in the central throat. There were many small flocks
of horned grebes - well over a  hundred individuals in sight. In one area,
a group of 6-10 common terns was flying over the water along with 25+
Bonaparte's gulls.

In the edge woods, I saw LOTS of yellow-rumped warblers and one magnolia
and one nashville. Kinglets of both species were abundant, as were song and
white-crowned sparrows, plus one white-throated.

It was a very nice, but short visit.  Randy Rowe, Wooster
