A hardy crew of 9 of us out on the Ohio Div. of Natural Areas and Preserves Association (ODNAPA) field trip defied the off-and-on rain and had a pretty good day at LaDue Reservoir this morning. More than 200 hooded mergs, dozens of gadwalls - which outnumbered the mallards - several shovellers, 1 nice pintail drake, several good numbers (several dozen) buffleheads, at least one sizable rafts of ruddy ducks3 female goldeneye, 2 female common mergansers; only a few Canada geese (!); some pied-billed grebes, a couple of common loons.

Didn't see any bald eagles or Bonaparte's gulls, but there were ring-billed gulls and at least one herring gull pecking at a dead fish. Still hundreds of coots. Other birds included a pair of red-tailed hawks, a small flock (< 10) pine siskins in the alders near the boathouse; at least one American pipit, a great blue heron, and, in the ponds on the west side of Valley Rd, several killdeer and a greater yellow legs. Special thanks to Matt Valencic for his help in making sure we saw all that LaDue had offer today.
