I had low expectations for the limited time I could bird at Mosquito Lake
today, but the brief trip was certainly worth the effort.

*Mosquito Lake 11/7/2014*
10:00 – 11:00 AM, Light snow & rain, Winds NNW ~12 mph


*South side of causeway:*
44 Common Loon – this was only how many I was able to see well enough to
positively identify, there were more loons further out
2 Double-crested Cormorant
5 Red-breasted Merganser
78 Bonaparte’s Gull – small flocks of 5-8 birds, watched a flock harassing
a Loon (x3)
1 Ring-billed Gull
1 Belted Kingfisher

 *Refuge/north end of lake:*
17 Pied-billed Grebe
14 Double-crested Cormorant
1 Great Blue Heron
Lots and lots of Canada Goose
48 Mallard
9 American Black Duck
72 Gadwall
123 Green-winged Teal
48 Northern Pintail
33 Red-breasted Merganser
137 Hooded Merganser
1 Adult Bald Eagle
1 Red-shouldered Hawk
2 Red-tailed Hawk
1 American Kestrel
300+ American Coot
550+ Bonaparte’s Gull – looked like many more were further out, might be
close to 900 but too far out to positively identify
7 Ring-billed Gull
5 Northern Juncos
An assortment of resident songbirds


*Elsewhere:*
2 Adult Bald Eagles flying over St Rt 46 in Howland, chasing each other
over the rooftops of suburbia
