It never ceases to amaze me the inaccuracy of some ebird record locations.
There were ebird records of land birds 2+ miles out in the middle of lake
superior (not on a freighter), groups of 20+ horned grebes on land
locations, and Harris' sparrow reported in the middle of a river.
These errors are not restricted to new birders, with a few "experts" making
errors also.
It is not the responsibility of the ebird reviewer to catch these errors.
The reviewers only look at a small fraction of all records, those of rare
birds, high counts or of species seen out of season. There is no way
reviewers have the time to look at every detail of every record. Reviewers
mostly do a good job of weeding out questionable records.
It would not take much more effort for individuals to give an accurate
location of records. Just zoom in on the area and give an accurate location.
Good birding,
John Herman
