The annual Fall/Winter gathering of Common Mergansers continued today, Tuesday, at Pine Lake in southeastern Mahoning County. At about 2:30PM, we recorded another unbelievable count of 238+ of these beauties during our visit. The Common Mergansers were concentrated at the southwest corner of the lake adjacent to The Firestone Tire tractor test track. Viewing with a scope can be accomplished from the east end of Lipply Road looking to the northwest or from the end of Harbour Lights Boulevard, accessed thru The Pine Lake Reserve development off of SR7. On Lipply Road you will pass right under a visible Bald Eagle nest. Some of the other lake highlights today were: 150+ Hooded Mergansers, 90+ Northern Shovelers, 250+ Ruddy Ducks, 1 Blue Phase Snow Goose, 40+ Buffleheads, 40+ Lesser Scaup, and 20+ Herring Gulls.
