A very pale, frosty redpoll looking much like Hoary was photographed yesterday at Lorain Impoundment. Photos were inconclusive. Lots of folks searching today were rightfully excited by paler Common Redpolls in the group, but every pale redpoll does not equal Hoary. Many characters come into play for a complete ID-- streaking on flanks, streaking on upper tail coverts and undertail coverts, amount of white on the secondaries, coloration of the mantle (back), bill shape/size and "giss." Taking as many photos as possible of very pale, frosty birds will help settle the finer marks. Variation in redpolls can make certain birds quite tricky. Good luck out there.
