For those around Columbus, Slate Run MetroPark has had some decent winter birding this week.

Today the pond at Buzzards Roost picnic shelter held several redheads, 3-4 canvasbacks, 3 goldeneyes, and a horned grebe. Earlier in the week a lesser scaup was observed. A red shouldered hawk (not sure if one or more than one) has been seen throughout the park, most recently and most often along Duvall Road, but also in Shady Grove and along the main park road. Northern harriers have been seen periodically, often along the farm road or Marcy road. Barred and great-horned owls can be heard at dusk in the wetlands or near the park main gate. Coveys of quail and pheasant have been observed along the road to the living history farm and along Marcy Rd. The quail are part of a reintroduction program that has so far been successful in producing park-born birds. Expected winter and feeder birds are present in good numbers.
